A critical part of any therapeutic intervention is the gathering of information and rapport building.  I initially use NLP techniques in client sessions as part of the information gathering process to help you better understand yourself, clarify what’s worrying you at a deeper level.  Identify specific goals to help you stop worrying and achieve greater happiness and success in life.    

The benefits of NLP coaching is that it works at a conscious level but questions asked work at a ‘deeper level’, they are ‘deep dive’ questions.  The chatty bit, when gathering information of significant past life events, present day and future goals and aspirations has achieved many ‘lightbulb’  moments.  This approach helps us tap into ‘your current map and model of the world’.   We all have mental maps, which represent our perception of the world, however your ‘map is not the territory’.

Another benefit of NLP coaching whilst gathering of information is that it also helps to develop rapport and understanding, establishing a safe non-judgmental environment for you to bare your soul, share your fears, worries and importantly the outcomes you wish to achieve as a result. 

So, what is meant by the ‘map is not the territory’?

Our experiences in life are unique, we  process life through our set of personal perceptual filters.  Every perception is ‘filtered’ and is influenced by many factors, culture, family, education, environments, personal history, and other influences.

Our perceptions of events are unique to us however our perception of it may not necessarily represent true reality.  The way that we perceive something (our thinking) is the way that we will react to it, our reaction to any situation will be unique. 

Have you ever found yourself stuck in a negative behavioural loop or you keep travelling down a ‘blind alley’, encountering one roadblock after another, unable to find the solution to your problem or a way out?  Then the likelihood is that your map is ‘outdated’ no longer serving you on your journey in life and you need to create a ‘new map’.  These ‘roadblocks’ are internally stored at a subconscious level, they are internal and difficult to identify, and deeply rooted. ‘They have a strong emotional anchor holding them in place’ – they create your reality, even if in a sense it is not real. Another benefit of NLP coaching is that it gest you to studying your thinking, your thought processing behind your behaviour, by utilising NLP tools and techniques this can help create ‘new maps.’   With new maps you reach new destinations!

 

Perceptual Filtering to help solve what is worrying you

Our perceptual filtering works at an unconscious level, change your filters, and you change what you experience. So, through the gathering of information, we tap into your map and model of the world, and you get to see things from a different perspective.  Looking at your life through a different lens, gives you a different perspective, leading to a change in behaviour.  (I recently read a great article on  NLP Perceptual Filters and the Filtering Mindset by  Tom Doz  which explores this aspect of NLP in a little more detail.)

Also, by exploring the language we use which influences the way we think and the results we achieve enables us to further  ‘tap into your map and model of the world.

Having tapped into your ‘map and model of the world’ we then get to deep dive into the subconscious mind, your power engine.  Your subconscious mind is responsible for 90% of your mind’s thoughts, actions, emotions, and processes.  It’s your storage area containing beliefs, values, emotions, habits, imagination, and your intuition. 

Utilising the information gathered in the earlier sessions, Hypnotherapy sessions focus on addressing your subconscious mind.  Utilising a wide range of techniques which may include enlisting the power of your own imagination; storytelling, metaphor; direct suggestions for beneficial change.  It may also incorporate analytical techniques to tackle the root case and uncover problems deemed to lie in your past or concentrate more on your current life and presenting problems. 

We all have the solution to our problems; it’s just the solutions are often lost in the detritus of life.  The benefit of hypnotherapy is that it empowers you to find the right solutions for life long ever lasting change.  Change manifests in varying ways, sometimes subtly sometimes profound, however it’s most times life-changing regardless.

Utilising NLP at a conscious level which represents 10% (willpower; analysis; decision-making)combined with Hypnotherapy at a conscious level represents 90% (beliefs, values, emotions, habits, imagination, and intuition) is transformational and life changing.  It has been proven that will power alone is not the only precursor to success.  We must combine and align the conscious with the subconscious to achieve greater success and happiness in life.  I read a great article on ‘success not being about willpower’ written by Conor Neill who writes that

I do agree however it’s also about environment and so much more.
